More than just a workout - Nia ® is the original and most advanced form of fusion fitness It is a fitness and self healing programme which incorporates nine major elements - Aikido, Tae Kwan Do, Tai Chi, Duncan Dance, Jazz Dance, Modern Dance, Alexander Technique, the work of Moshe Feldenkrais and Yoga.
Each Nia class follows a seven workout cycle which helps to make it a truly unique experience - we warm the body up, energize with a mixture of freeform and choreographed moves and then cool down again with slower movements finishing off with a series of stretches.
The music is wide ranging from African tribal beats to pop music - there is no competition - everybody just moves in whatever way is appropriate for them.
Nia works because it is fun to do, it is creative, adaptable to any fitness level or age group and the music is rhythmic and motivating.
Classic Nia is danced all the way through the routine whereas Nia for the Knackered is for those who need to exercise at a more leisurely pace.
The Alexander Technique is a skill for self-development teaching you to change long-standing habits that cause unnecessary tension in everything you do.
Whatever your age or ability, the Technique can help boost your performance in any activity and relieve the pain and stress caused by postural habits, like slouching or rounded shoulders.
Working with your teacher, you will learn to recognise your usual reactions to the stresses of life. You will find out how you have been contributing to your problems, how to prevent them and regain control .
